Laurel Business Institute in Uniontown, PA, is proud to announce Mayla Berrios as the first recipient of the George R. Smalley INC. Co. scholarship.
This scholarship provides financial assistance for students excited about the career path they’ve chosen in Laurel’s Electrical Technician program. The first recipient, Mayla Berrios, is in her final semester of Laurel’s Electrical Technician program. “Growing up, my father always worked in power plants, and I have always been fascinated by the work he does,” says Berrios. “He always came home from work and told me stories and showed me pictures of his day-to-day job.”
In the program, Berrios has learned skills and understanding in areas such as PLC Programming, Raceway Systems, and Load Calculations. “It has always sparked my interest to learn how to run and maintain a power plant and how it powers the grid so seamlessly. As I got older, I wondered if I could actually do this as a female, but as I continue through schooling with determination and hard work, I know that I definitely can! I am determined to be not only a great electrician but a great female electrician!” states Berrios.
This scholarship is available to students through the Premier Employer Partnership between Laurel and George R. Smalley Co. Inc. The partnership is a great pathway for students and graduates of Laurel’s Electrical Technician and Computer Network Security Technician programs to experience internships during their education and potential career placement upon graduation!
